We’re delighted to share that thinkBeyond Talent’s Strategy team have been shortlisted for Best Environmental Cause Campaign in the Campaigns for Good Awards. The nomination is a recognition for our work with UN Patron of the Oceans Lewis Pugh and ‘The Long Swim’, a campaign designed to call on the UK Government to increase the area of fully protected Marine Areas in UK waters and to back a call for 30% of the World’s oceans to be protected by 2030.

Overseen by PR Week, Campaign and Third Sector the Campaigns for Good Awards rewards excellence in cause marketing and social purpose and recognises campaigns that use creative ideas to successfully further positive causes. The winner of the Best Environmental Cause Campaign Award will be announced on the 8th July and will be awarded to the best campaign bringing together multiple organisations to raise awareness of an environmental cause or issue and promote it in an effective way.

The Long Swim centred around an eye catching physical challenge, with Lewis competing a 49 day, 530km swim from Land’s End to Dover wearing nothing but a pair of Speedos, in doing so becoming the first person to complete the feat. The swim was designed to turn a spotlight on the beauty and fragility of the UK’s marine ecosystem and create a level of media coverage and public engagement that would allow Lewis to put pressure on the UK government to . thinkBeyond Talent worked alongside Lewis to create the overarching narrative of the campaign, secure and manage commercial and media partners and to deliver event activation along the route of the swim.

Having secured a media partnership with Sky and the support of sponsors FXTM and Speedo, the campaign was delivered alongside Frank PR and Surfers Against Sewage and achieved huge public engagement and media coverage, with daily Sky News coverage and 1800 global news stories. As a result of the campaign and Lewis’s subsequent diplomacy the UK Government has since announced an increase of marine protected areas from 2% to 22% in South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (British Overseas Protectorate)  and the creation of 443,000 square kilometres of protected area around the Ascension Islands to help protect critical habitats . They also took a historic stand for ocean conservation at the UN General Assembly in New York in September 2018, calling on all nations to contribute towards a global target of safeguarding 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.

It was a privilege to be involved in such an important campaign and further information on our work with The Long Swim can be seen here.

We continue to work with Lewis and are looking forward to the next exciting chapter, watch this space!
